Toba, January 17th, 2024 - PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminum or INALUM in the 2019-2023 period is actively involved in maintaining the biodiversity of flora and fauna in the Paritohan Hydroelectric Power Plant area and the Toba Lake Area. This is in line with the vision of TJSL INALUM and Sustainability Pathway Holding Indonesian Mining Industry (MIND ID).
INALUM Corporate Secretary Mahyaruddin Ende said that the hard work of colleagues at the Paritohan PLTA unit is solely working to maintain the surrounding ecosystem while protecting the environment so that the energy supply which is the backbone of operations is maintained.
"There are several large programs carried out by the Paritohan Hydropower Unit to protect the ecosystem and environment around the hydropower plant. These programs were formed as INALUM's effort to realize environmentally friendly operational sustainability. "The company also carries out this program in collaboration and synergy with all elements of society so that the existence of INALUM and the environment remain side by side while the availability of energy for smelting operations is maintained," said Mahyaruddin.
The programs implemented include:
Lake Toba Conservation Program
This program aims to restore the function of the Lake Toba Water Catchment Area as a buffer area for the availability and stability of Lake Toba water levels. Not only planting trees, but also maintenance, monitoring and evaluation. In total, by 2023, 668,880 trees will be planted consisting of 25 species on 1,436.8 hectares of land. The trees planted are woody fruit trees and the results of their planting can be felt directly by the community, so indirectly this program involves the active role of the community.
Tree Nursery Optimization
This program is the beginning of tree planting activities. Plant seeds that are ready will be planted around the company location. Plant seeds are also distributed to local communities so they can be utilized. It is recorded that there have been nurseries for 4,418 species on 0.10 hectares of land.
Jurung Fish Conservation
The existence of Jurung fish in the Asahan River is starting to be threatened because local people catch them without cultivating or breeding them. This program carries the Ex-Situ concept and succeeded in presenting 1,352 Jurung fish on 0.15 hectares of land.
Paritohan Hydroelectric Housing Residential Park
This is a program to plant endemic trees on 4 hectares of land. In 2023, 700 trees will be successfully planted from 5 species (kemenyan, andaliman, sotul, lotus and klambang)
Multi Purpose Tree Species Plant Nursery
As a Water Catchment Area (DTA) for Lake Toba, the existing land can still be said to be quite critical due to development and illegal logging. PT INALUM collaborates with the Sumatra Living Heritage Foundation (WHIS) to carry out plant nurseries in the Samosir Botanical Gardens. In total there are 17,000 trees planted with multi-purpose tree species.
INALUM's sustainability programs are the company's commitment to building a sustainable future. INALUM prioritizes environmental preservation, promotes social responsibility, maintains effective governance practices, fosters strong relationships with investors, and submits transparent sustainability reports. By upholding these principles, the company ensures the sustainability and positive impact of the company's operational activities, as well as contributing to the welfare of local communities and the wider community.
